VELLORE: Vellore and its suburbs reeled under scorching heat wave conditions as the mercury on Friday crossed the 43 degrees Celsius mark, registering the highest temperature for this season, so far. Most residents preferred to stay indoors and roads wore a deserted look. On May 4, the first day of Agni Nakshtram, the Fort City recorded 42 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, showers in the first week of May cooled the place down and temperature hovered around 34 degrees. Clear indications of rising mercury was see from May 14, as temperature touched 39 degrees. The heat wave intensified, reaching 41 degrees a few days back, and Friday’s maximum of 42.4 degrees Fahrenheit was the highest recorded for the season so far.The highest in the season over the years has been the 44.5 degrees Celsius, recorded last year. If this year’s graph is anything to go by, there is the likelihood of temperatures shooting past last year’s high.
