Director of Career Launcher, Arindam Lahiri gives tips on planning, time management and group discussions for CAT 2006.

New Delhi: "You have a number of CAT preparation books available in the market There are books specifically for the quant and the verbal ability sections as well. Consider the benchmark of previous years' papers,” says director of Career Launcher, Arindam Lahiri, as he tells you how to Bell the CAT.

I intend to take CAT next year. Could you please recommend me books that I should study? And can you also tell me how much do I need to score in order to be called for the interview in a good B-school? (Rahul, Amritsar)

Answer: You have a number of CAT preparation books available in the market including one from Career Launcher titled MBA Entrance Guide. There are books specifically for the quant and the verbal ability sections as well. Consider the benchmark of previous years' papers. You need to aim at scoring around 50 (out of 150) for getting an interview call from a good B-school.

With CAT just three days away, nothing much can be done but I would like to know if you could convey some strategy for choosing my DI questions or sets and my RC passages. (Abhishek Ramasheshan, Bangalore)

Answer: Pick a set that looks doable to you and spend some time with it. In case it makes sense to you, you can proceed by attempting to answer the questions. If you find it difficult to comprehend after spending a minute on the set, then move on to the next doable set.

As I am weak in maths, how do you advise me to approach the CAT paper? Please advise me in a broader frame of mind and also give me some tips regarding the other sections. (Rajath M, Mysore)

Answer: If Maths is your weak area, do not start attempting the paper with Maths. You could do it in the middle maybe. Scan the entire section before attempting it. Start with a problem that appears to be 'known' to you.

The objective is to maximise your attempts. In case you find the section too difficult, do not waste much time. Try to maximise your overall score in order to have an option from a good B-school.

I am a CAT 2006 aspirant. What are the things to be done in the last 10 days to boost one's performance in reading comprehension? I have a reading speed of approximately 300 words per minute. When I answer questions from this area, I am able to eliminate two of the four choices but can't make up the right choice between the remaining two options. (Ifteqar, Hyderabad)

Answer: The last two choices always add to the dilemma. There's no magic potion available to solve this. Wherever you feel confident, take a risk to mark one of the options. However, if you are not sure, avoid marking it. The other option could be- each passage has a couple of easy questions, attempt them and move on to the next passage.

I have no idea about the pattern, the format, the number of questions and all that in the CAT test. I am attending this exam just because my mother wanted me to do so. Can you give me a correct picture of the whole paper so that I could at least get the ‘feel’ of CAT. (Sudhana, Hubli)

Answer: CAT changes its stripes every year. As of last year, the paper had three sections with two sub-sections in each. There were a total of 90 questions with 30 in each section. Within each section, there were 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each. Just an afterthought, make your own decisions.

What's your reaction?
