NEW DELHI: M Karunanidhi may not be in favour of opening up the Indian retail sector to foreign investors, but his party DMK is unlikely to pull out from the UPA coalition, if push comes to shove.“We do not agree with FDI in retail, but our party will not pull out of the coalition,” said Tiruchy Siva, DMK leader in Rajya Sabha. Instead, DMK has demanded the government shelve the FDI in retail. However, Prime Minister on Tuesday virtually rejected the demands from within UPA and outside for rollback of FDI in retail. At a youth Congress meeting, Manmohan Singh justified the government’s decision as a well-considered move and attacked the Opposition for not allowing Parliament to function.“The DMK demanded the government shelve the FDI in retail. There was no discussion in the party so far on any decision to pull out from the coalition. Party high command would discuss the issue if required,” Tiruchy Siva told Express.Although DMK MPs met the Prime Minister on Tuesday afternoon on the Mullaiperiyar issue, there was no mention of FDI in retail in the meeting.
