HYDERABAD: After dithering for months, the government has finally chosen a director for the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.Dr Dharma Rakshak, head of the cardiothoracic department, was on Friday picked for the post and he took charge from incharge director, IAS officer Prashant Mahapatra. The post had been lying vacant for almost 10 months now with the government examining various options, including the demand that the post should be given to a doctor from Telangana region, while health minister DL Ravindra Reddy reportedly pitched for Dr Rakshak. At one stage, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy considered two doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences but they declined the offer. Though there were quite a few other contenders from NIMS itself, it appears the chief minister finally went by the recommendation of his minister.Dr Rakshak has been given a one-year term as head of NIMS which is plagued by varied problems, including allegations of corruption. In what appears to be a fallout of the government’s decision, senior orthopaedic surgeon, Dr L Narendranath, who was the associate Dean, quit the administrative post.
