A new legislative committee must be constituted to look into the lease violations by the estates of Nelliampathy, said the members of the CPM delegation which visited the estates in Nelliampathy on Thursday.
The visiting delegation consisted of CPM politburo member M A Baby, state secretariat members A K Balan and Elamaram Kareem, V Chenthamarakshan MLA and district secretary of the CPM C K Rajendran.
The visit of the state-level leadership was a follow-up to the visit of the five-member CPM MLAs’ delegation from the district, which visited Nelliampathy two days ago.
M A Baby alleged that the UDF Government had deliberately tried to file a weak affidavit on the issue in the court. He said that the Nelliampathy issue should not be discussed by the UDF alone, and therefore, a legislative committee should be sent to the place to assess the situation. Baby said that the government was deliberately “losing” the cases wherein the Forest Department was involved.
The government was adopting a stand where the same legal advisors were appearing for both the state and the defendants on the Nelliampathy issue.
Former minister A K Balan said that the takeover of the estates which had violated the lease was being sabotaged by the government and that the CPM will begin an agitation on the issue. He said that all those responsible for encroachment in Nelliampathy were big players, and there were no small farmers.
The members of the delegation added that while taking over the estates, the rights of workers must be protected.
