In a daring attack in broad daylight, the independent Councillor of Ward 13 of Sriperumbudur Union was hacked by a gang of over a dozen people at Pillaipakkam, near here on Monday. Police have arrested one person and are searching for 14 others.
Police said PPJ Kumaran, (38), who had also produced a Tamil movie, Vaigai, was on his way to his office when he was attacked. While he was accompanied in a car by his friend Mathi alias Mathiyalagan (35), another friend, Shankar, followed them in another car.
Their movement was reportedly watched by two-wheeler escorts who passed on the information to the waiting gang. When the cars came near the Block Development Office en route to Sriperumbudur Bazaar, the gang launched a sudden attack on Kumaran’s car, hurling petrol bombs. The car veered off the road and landed in a pit. Even before Kumaran and mathi could recover from the shock, the gang members hacked them with lethal weapons. Kumaran died on the spot while Mathi and Shankar were admitted to hospital with severe injuries.
Police suspected that the gang could have been hired to carry out this pre-planned murder. Also, the murder could have been the outcome of enmity in real estate and scrap business that the victim had ventured into.
Kumaran himself was a history sheeter and had six murder cases against him since 2003. He had been acquitted in five murder cases.
