CHENNAI: An illegal single-storey commercial complex, built on poromboke land at Pallikaranai near here, was demolished by revenue authorities on Tuesday. The authorities also took the encroached land into their possession.According to A N Panneerselvam, VAO of Pallikaranai, a total of 10 grounds of land was encroached by an individual at a location close to Thanthai Periyar Nagar in Survey No.23A o 1A1. The land came under the Meikal Poromboke category. In about four grounds, approximately 6000 sq ft of building was constructedWhen the issue came to the notice of the authorities, steps were taken to raze the building. “As per norms, we gave a show cause notice. Then we served an eviction notice and now we have demolished the complex.”Welcoming the move, S Selvadurai, a local trader said the such encroachment had been on the rise. “Even sometime back the authorities have retrieved government land from illegal occupation near Sitteri. More such action is needed to deter law-breakers.”
