CHENNAI: Chennaiites have reasons to rejoice. The government on Thursday announced that 30 important roads would be upgraded as ‘world-class corridors’ and multi-storey parking lots would be constructed at the busy T-Nagar and Flower Bazaar junctions. To reduce residents’ water woes, a 400 mld desalination would also also be set up.Municipal Administration Minister K P Munusamy made these announcements while replying to the discussion on the demands for grants for his department in the State Assembly.In a step that would bring relief to the residents of T Nagar and the traders near Flower Bazaar and those who visit these congested areas, the Minister announced that automatic multi-storey parking slots would be set up in front of Panagal Park and near Flower Bazaar Police Station.The parking lot at T Nagar would come up in an area of 1,600 square metre of land on Bashyam Road while the one at Flower Bazaar would come up at a 700 square metre plot. The parking lot at Flower Bazaar would be only for two wheelers. Detailed Project Reports for both parking lots would be obtained from the consultants concerned and it would be constructed on Design-Build-Own and Transfer (DBOT) basis.To alleviate the problems faced by the residents of T Nagar and those who pass through the area, a consultant was appointed on ‘Thiyagaraya Nagar Re-development Programme’. The Consultant had recommended setting up of a multi-storey parking lot on Bashyam Road. Munusamy said 30 important roads in Chennai would be chosen for upgradation as ‘world-class corridors’ based on their width, number of vehicles passing through and commercial establishments located near them.Stormwater drains, cables of different service sectors (ducts), pavements, separate cycle row, modern bus bays, streetlights and other facilities would be established on these corridors. This project would be implemented at a cost of `300 crore. The Minister said to meet the growing water demand of Chennai city, a 100 mld capacity desalination plant at Minjur, north of Chennai, was set up on DBOT basis and another with same capacity at Nemmeli on the East Coast Road was being set up.Munusamy said Tamil Nadu government had also proposed to set up another 400 mld capacity desalination plant at south of Chennai and for this, it has been decided to appoint a consultant to prepare a feasibility study.Drinking water pipes with 2,000 mm width would be laid for 6.5 km between the stretch of Chembarampakkam water treatment plant and the Poonamallee bypass road (near Saveetha Dental College) to bring 530 mld of water. The pipeline would be laid at a cost of `41.35 crore and this would help increase the water supply to the sub-urban areas of Chennai, the Minister said.To avoid water theft from the Metrowater trucks, GPS instruments would be fitted at a cost of `54 lakh.
