CHENNAI: Mayor M Subramanian on Thursday asked all the departments concerned to be ready to meet any contingency during the monsoon season.The Mayor said this while he was chairing a meeting in the presence of Corporation commissioner D Karthikeyan at the civic body’s headquarters, to chalk out strategies to meet emergency situations in case of torrential rain. During the meet, representatives of more than 30 different government agencies, including the police, the public works department, the coast guard, the departments of fire and rescue services, fisheries and highways, the directorate of public health and the Tamil Nadu electricity board, apprised the participants of their preparedness to handle the ensuing monsoons.Addressing the representatives, Subramanian asked the Corporation officials to stop allowing any contractor from September 1 to dig roads on bus routes. He also appealed to the Corporation, the State highways, Metro Water and the PWD to clean out stormwater drains and sewerage clogs before the Monsoon to ensure smooth let-out of rainwater into rivers.Karthikeyan appealed to all the departments concerned to work together to minimise problems faced by the public during the monsoon season.The Corporation’s four relief centres have been equipped to handle a large number of crowd, with a sustained food supply in case of massive evacuation due to flooding.Deputy Mayor R Sathyabama, ruling party leader N Ramalingam and Opposition floor leader Saidai P Ravi were also present.
