CJI Chandrachud Visits Dwarkadhish Temple In Gujarat, Explains Meaning of Flag Atop To Rajkot Lawyers
CJI Chandrachud talked about the adaptation of technology in the judiciary and said that the step is not only about modernisation but is also strategic.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday drew inspiration from the dhwaja (flags) atop temples and urged district court lawyers to function in a manner that the “dhwaja of justice” keeps flying for generations to come. The CJI earlier in the morning also offered prayers at Shree Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka, Gujarat.

Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a new district court building in Gujarat’s Rajkot, CJI Chandrachud said, “In envisioning a society where every citizen is assured the right to justice, the district courts emerge as the initial point of recourse for every citizen who seeks redress. Citizens don’t come to the Supreme Court first and foremost. They come to the district courts.”

“So in your work as members of the bar, you will generate confidence, or the lack of confidence in citizens. It is in our efficiency as district court lawyers that we will really ensure that this dhwaja of justice will keep flying in the generations to come,” he added.

Mentioning his visit to the temple in Dwarka, the CJI said that the ‘Dhwaja’ (flag) of the Dwarkadhish temple, which is similar to that of the Lord Jagannath temple in Odisha’s Puri, holds a special meaning for the people of the judicial community.

“There is a universality of change in our nation that binds us all together. This ‘flag’ has a special meaning for us, and the meaning that the ‘flag’ gives us is that there is a unifying power over us all as lawyers, judges and citizens – and that unifying power is our humanity, Which is governed by the rule of law and the Constitution of India,” he said.

“Beyond just the physical structure, our building represents a commitment and a promise – a promise that within its walls there will be speed, access and fairness in the pursuit of justice,” the CJI said.

Asking the district court authorities and judges to work towards ‘zero waste facility’ inside the court premises just like the Somnath temple, Chief Justice Chandrachud, “We should be inspired by the ideals of the great temple in Gujarat and convert every court system in the state into a ‘zero waste’ facility.”

Adaption of Technology in Judiciary

CJI Chandrachud further talked about the adaptation of technology in the judiciary and said that the step is not only about modernisation but is also strategic towards democratising access to justice. He also underlined the need to train lawyers to use technology.

Inaugurated the AI-based ‘Text-to-Speech Call-Out System’ during the inauguration of the new district court building in Rajkot, he said, “Taking advantage of these advancements will help in bridging the gap and increasing efficiency and ensure that justice delivery is free from geographical and technological constraints.”
