Chennai: In a major crackdown on credit card fraudsters, the Central Crime Branch of the Chennai Police has arrested a four member gang in Chennai. In the last one month three such gangs have already been nabbed for using various methods to commit frauds with both credit and debit cards.
Additional Commissioner, Crime Abhay Kumar Singh said, "Before the credit cards come to the customer, they are intercepting by some mechanical devices ands they pack the cover as if no one has opened it and they steal the data and they make a fresh card and use it all across the world."
It's not just the credit cards, the debit cards too don't seem to be safe. In many cases, it was found that the ATM's of various banks were fraudulently tampered. With the use of advanced devices like the skimmer, embosser etc, these gangs steal the data from the debit card.
"Irrespective of which card you are holding, once you go to the particular targeted ATM centre and use that centre, your entire data including your pin is getting transferred to that machine. They use that data to make a fresh ATM card," Singh said.
The Chennai Police has now called for a meeting with all the banks and has sought their help in preventing such frauds in the future.
The banks have been asked to strengthen security at the ATM's with proper CCTV cameras. The use of biometric cards for identification is being contemplated. Banks have also been asked to consider dynamic PIN number system in all ATM's and SMS alert on every transaction made must be made compulsory.
The Banks have also been asked to properly educate their customers about these issues to ensure the fraud is curbed as much as possible. But with the criminals coming up with newer techniques to commit fraud everyday, it's a challenge for the Chennai Police to ensure they get to the bottom of this scam and nab the others involved as soon as possible.
