Bush bans torture of US detainees
After immense political pressure from Republican Senator, Bush decides to ban torture or inhuman treatment of detainees.

New Delhi: President George W Bush and US Senator John McCain on Thursday announced a legislation banning abuse of detainees in US custody.

The White House's decision to ban cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners comes after immense political pressure from Republican Senator John McCain.

The amendment will allow civilian interrogators to defend themselves against anyone who questions them about following lawful orders.

This agreement basically does two things: One, it puts into the Army Field Manual the specific procedures for interrogations and two, it prohibits cruelty or abuse on detainees.

Earlier, the White House had sought protection from prosecution for interrogators accused of violating the rule, but McCain had rejected it.

What's your reaction?
