BANGALORE: Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev said that BU degree certificates should clearly indicate whether the student has attained the degree traditionally or through distance education.“Certificates presently do not indicate the mode of education. To protect the interest of traditional degree holders, this indication has to be made,” he said during BU’s Academic Council meet on Wednesday. While most of the Council members were for the idea, the VC stressed for more deliberation on this matter in the next meet. “We want to follow what some ofthe other universities are doing. Nomenclature of distance education has to be mentioned in the degree certificates. A traditional degree holder should not feel cheated,” he added. Civic Sense may be introduced as an additional subject in first semester for all undergraduate courses possibly from January. “Lack of civic sense is turning out to be a black stop on Brand Bangalore. Hence, a Committee of Deans will be constituted and several NGOs and other organisations will be roped in to develop a comprehensive syllabus,” Prabhu Dev said. The proposal was welcomed by all members. The Vice Chancellor remarked that Bangalore University will voluntarily fill all the potholes to wake BBMP from its slumber. “The university will take the initiative as a first step towards civic sense,” he added.
