PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry police, on Sunday, using clues from a documentary shot by two Italian tourists, arrested Subash Chandra for the murder of his younger brother Devendra Kumar on February 9.SSP (Law and Order) V J Chandran said Subash murdered Devendra due to jealousy which stemmed from Devendra being a successful tourist guide and he was given preferential treatment by his parents. The brothers from Jodhpur in Rajasthan were working as tourist guides in Puducherry.Subash also harboured enmity with Devendra because he wanted to divide their family property to construct a shop for himself, but the deceased and his father objected to the idea. The two Italian tourists made a documentary as part of their video on Pondicherry tourism. In the video Devendra Kumar revealed that his brother was jealous of him as he had made many contacts and was well known in profession. The copies of the video have been submitted to the police, Chandran said, and added that the Italians had requested that their identity be kept secret.Since the deceased was working as tourist guide, the investigation officials probed facts relating to the relationship with his elder brother Subash, who was also a guide and started living separately from him on February 3.During investigation, the police examined the foreign tourists and some residents, who were well acquainted with Devendra Kumar.Based on clues, Subash Chandra was arrested and upon interrogation, confessed that he had murdered his younger brother due to jealousy. The incident happened when Subash, who was living at a house in Vanarapet, reached his brother’s house at Vaithikuppam around 8 am on February 8 and knocked at the door. Devendra opened the door and went back to sleep again after which Subash bolted the door and took out the knife and stabbed him on the back. In shock, Devendra got up but was pushed against a wall and stabbed on the head with a pair of scissors taken from nearby bookshelf. After confirming the death of his brother, Subash changed his blood stained clothes and left the house with a bag containing the clothes, knife, scissors and shoes. He went to the sea shore and threw his brother’s mobile phone into the sea. Since some local residents accosted him, Subash concealed the bag under the boulders at the sea shore of Thanthirankuppam. Subash was remanded to judicial custody on Monday afternoon. Further investigation is on.
