CHENNAI: The observance of the tenth death anniversary of Congress veteran GK Moopanar was dampened by a tragic coincidence, when the leader’s younger brother Sampath Moopanar passed away on Tuesday morning. Sixty-seven years old Sampath Moopanar had come to Chennai to take part in functions to mark his brother’s death.Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan, son of G K Moopanar, who was at his father’s memorial on GN Chetty Road had to go home on hearing the news. Sampath, who sources say has been ailing for some time now, suffered a massive heart attack, and was declared ‘brought dead’ at the Apollo Hospital in Teynampet. Sampath is survived by his wife and two daughters. The functions organised to mark Moopanar’s death anniversary carried on without Vasan, who was to preside over the release of an anthology of poems about his father. When news spread of their leader’s death, Congressmen became muted in their shows of belligerence. The G K Moopanar memorial this year also featured an exhibition of paintings and sketches on the leader. Vasan loyalists also took out their customary candle light rally carrying.
