Kolkata: CPM politburo member and Chairman of the Left front since 2001, Biman Bose, has been named the state secretary for West Bengal.
He replaces Anil Biswas, who died on last Sunday. Biman Bose is considered a hardliner, unlike Anil Biswas. Bose's name was decided at a meeting of the state secretariat and state committee on Friday morning.
Announcing his appointment, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya said the choice was unanimous. In the presence of Bose, the Chief Minister said he would also continue to function as the Chairman of the ruling Left Front.
The unanimous decision on appointing Bose as the party's secretary showed that the whole organisation wanted him to lead the party in the state, the Chief Minister said.
Bhattacharjee, also a politburo memebr, said the party would henceforward function on the basis of collective leadership.
"We are badly missing Anil Biswas but we have to fill in the gap. We have to perform collectively. We are in the midst of election campaign and under the leadership of Biman Bose, the new secretary, who will try to perform collectively," he said.
The party state secretariat and state committee met earlier in the day to choose the party's next state secretary. The meeting was attended by CPI (M) partriarch Jyoti Basu, party general secretary Prakash Karat, besides Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacherjee and several other top leaders of the party.
Considered as a deft orginser who maintains close links with the party organisation at grassroots level, 65-year-old Bose will lead the party organisation in the West Bengal
Assembly polls next month.
Bose's was the only name considered for the top post of the state party organisation. The CPI (M)'s allies in the Left Front also supported Bose to take up the job at what is described as a crucial juncture for the party.
