Bhardwaj must be dismissed: George
Keeping the heat on the govt over the Bofors issue, George Fernandes has demanded the resignation of law minister HR Bhardwaj.

New Delhi: The Opposition kept the heat on the government over the Bofors issue on Friday following a CNN-IBN exclusive report, revealing the UPA Government’s efforts to discreetly put an end to the howitzer controversy.

Holding Union law minister HR Bhardwaj responsible for giving Ottavio Quattrocchi a clean chit in the multi-crore defence scam, former defence minister George Fernandes on Friday demanded Bhardwaj's resignation.

Targetting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the scandal, Fernandes said: "The very least he can now do to retrieve the black blot is to dismiss his law minister and additional solicitor general B Dutta."

Fernandes, who has been a known critic of the Gandhi family, pointed out that the government tried to let Quattrocchi go scot-free even when an Interpol red alert was still pending against him.

Fernandes was addressing a press conference along with JD(U) spokesperson Shanbhu Srivastava in the capital.

On Thursday, the CBI came clean on the issue, saying it was still trying to extradite Quattrocchi to face the process of law in India.

CBI spokesperon G Mohanty said: "CBI is making all efforts to extradite him."

On his part, Bhardwaj tried to defend the move."Galat baat yeh thi ki aap bina saboot ke kisi ka paisa zabt kar do. (It was incorrect that you freeze somebody’s accounts without any proof,)" he said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, replying to a PIL filed in this case, has said it isn’t considering an early hearing. It will hear the case only in due course.
