THRISSUR: Owing to the sweltering heat, a Himalayan bear died here in the Thrissur Zoo on Sunday, the World Earth Day, reminding us to share a responsibility to protect our planet.According to Dr P B Giridas who conducted the post mortem, the bear was 34 years old. “Though its age was on the higher side, the unbearable humidity level was a major cause of death,” he said. On Sunday morning, the zoo watcher found one of the two bears in the zoo dead. Both the bears were tired after heat levels increased this summer and had been under observation for the last one week. The summer heat was unbearable for the pair of bears leading to fatigue in both. During earlier summers, the zoo authorities used to pump water and stuff large ice-cubes in the cage. This year a lot of water used to be pumped regularly. But on Saturday, the condition of the bear worsened and it died on Sunday morning owing to internal bleeding. The condition of the other bear, that is around 30, is also not stable, say the zoo officials. According to documents with the zoo, the bear was brought from a circus troupe 25 years ago. The life expectancy for the Himalayan bear is estimated to be around 20-30 years in the wild and around 45 in captivity.Thrissur Zoo is one of the oldest in the country and home to a wide variety of animals. Opened in 1885, the 13.5-acre park receives 2,000 visitors a day and the figures touch 10,000 during vacations.
