New Delhi: A suicide bomber killed 31 people and wounded 25 others in a blast that tore through a bus in Baghdad this morning on Thursday. Police said a suicide bomber boarded the bus as it started its journey to the Shiite city of Nasiriyah.
The bus was leaving the Nasiriyah terminal near the Kindi Hospital in southern Baghdad when the explosion occurred. Nasiriyah is a Shiite city about 320 kilometers southeast of the Iraqi capital.
This is the second suicide attack in two days. On Tuesday two female suicide bombers walked through the gates of a police academy in Baghdad and blew themselves up in classroom, killing 27 police cadets.
The attack comes exactly a week before Iraqis go to the polls to elect their first full-term parliament since the fall of Saddam Hussein.
Security forces are braced for a spike in violence ahead of the vote.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.
