New Delhi: Asus, which launched its range of ZenFone smartphones in India on Wednesday, will soon introduce a 4.5-inch version of its ZenFone 4 smartphone in the country. The phone is already listed on Flipkart as "coming soon", and will be available in India for Rs 6,999.

The upcoming variant of the ZenFone 4 will have similar specifications as the 4-inch ZenFone 4 - apart from a 1750 mAh battery, 8 megapixel rear camera and Android KitKat OS. The 4-inch model, on the other hand, comes with Android 4.3, 1600mAh battery, and a 5 megapixel camera.

The three new Asus smartphones - ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6 - are priced at Rs 5,999, Rs 9,999 and Rs 16,999, respectively. Asus said the five-inch ZenFone will come in two variants - 8GB (priced at Rs 9,999) and 16GB (for Rs 12,999).

The Indian smartphone market is witnessing strong competition between local and international players, all vying to grab a share of the multi-billion dollar market.

According to IDC, smartphone sales in India grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn.

In the first quarter of 2014, 17.59 million smartphones were shipped into India as compared to 6.14 million in the same period of 2013. Samsung was the market leader (35 per cent market share in Q1), followed by Micromax (15 per cent), Karbonn (10 per cent), LAVA (6 per cent) and Nokia(4 percent).

Affordable smartphones, especially those priced in the sub-Rs 12,000 category, are doing well in the Indian market.
