‘’Hum dar ke nahi bhaga sir...hamara mummy aur papa phone kar ke rone lage, isi liye Assam jaana pada. Hum wapas aa rahe hain..’’
This is what Biroj Gogoi, a native of Sibsagar in Assam, had to say when asked why he had fled Hyderabad merely on hearing rumours that Assamese may be attacked.
He and many others who fled to Assam say they will come back provided the situation after August 20, on which Muslims celebrate Eid, remains peaceful.
After nearly 7,000 Assamese fled Hyderabad in the last one week, the trend appears to have stopped in the last 24 hours though there have been reports that a few individuals left for Assam.
Speaking to Express over telephone from Sibsagar, Gogoi said that he had left Hyderabad along with 22 others. ‘’We just heard that Assamese are being threatened and attacked which will increase after August 20 and so we boarded the train to Assam,’’ said Gogoi, working as a security guard with Agile Private Security Agency.
The repeated telephone calls from his parents forced him to leave. He said “Parents were calling me and I had to go for their sake. But I have reserved my ticket for August 23 and will board Guhawati Express if nothing happens.
