Alleged 'maneater' tiger caught in Uttaranchal forest
Villagers are demanding that the tiger be captured and killed.

Kumao: The hunt for the alleged 'maneater' tiger on the lose in Uttaranchal has finally ended. The tiger was caught and tranquilised near Corbett National Park on Wednesday morning.

It had been the subject of much controversy after it killed a woman who had entered the forest to cut grass a couple of days ago.

Residents of Garjia village, where the victim lived, had been demanding that the tiger be captured and killed instead of being tranquilised and released back in Corbett.

The forest Department has argued that the animal is not a man eater - as it was the woman who had strayed into the forest and encroached on the tigers territory.

We spoke to tiger expert and president of Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) Belinda Wright a while ago. She has criticised the decision to send the tiger to the zoo as it is still not confirmed whether it’s a man-eater or not.

Wright said, “ There are specific guidelines as to whether a tiger is man-eater or not, but with one action it cannot be confirmed whether he is. If he is sent to the zoo, it is a tragedy to wildlife conservation.”
