PUDUCHERRY: Tension prevailed in Thilaspet area after Arumugam alias ‘Nondi’ Arumugam (32), an AINRC loyalist, was hacked to death by a gang late on Saturday night.   The Dhanavanthri Nagar police have lodged a case against seven persons including one Velayudham in connection with the murder, which took place very close to Chief Minister N Rangasamy’s residence.  Meanwhile, the area wore a deserted look on Sunday as most shops downed their shutters and local residents chose to remain indoors.  There was also a strong police presence in the area falling under the Indira Nagar Assembly constituency.According to sources,  the victim, Arumugam of Muthirayarpalayam arrived at Thilaspet in a car on Saturday night. An unidentified gang, who came in another car and a bike, then intercepted Arumugam’s vehicle and hacked him to death in his car  itself.  Police suspect political motives behind the incident.  During the recent bypolls to the Indira Nagar constituency, Arumugam supported the candidature of AINRC leader N S J Jayabal, while a group led by Velayudham were opposed to this.A month ago, Arumugam was admitted to the Apollo Hospital, Chennai, after he was allegedly manhandled by Velayudham’s group.  Sources added that the victim had several cases, including murder, registered against him.
