3 Records Joe Root Can Break During Pakistan-England Test Series
Root, who sits at No. 1 position in the ICC Test batter's ranking, will be in action for England in the three-match Test series against Pakistan, starting on October 7.

Joe Root will be in action for England in the three-match Test series against Pakistan that is set to start on October 7 in Multan. The 33-year-old right-handed batter was in red-hot form for Poms in the two red-ball series played against the West Indies and Sri Lanka in the third quarter of 2024, and he would like to maintain his performance in the away tour of Pakistan.

During the upcoming three matches, Root will have a chance to break multiple records and also get closer to legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in Test cricket.

Ahead of the start of the Pakistan-England Test series, here’s a look at three records Root can break in the upcoming matches:

Most runs in Tests for England: Root, who made his Test debut for England in Nagpur against India on December 13, 2012, has 12,402 runs to his name in 146 Tests played so far. If he manages to score at least 71 runs in the Test series against Pakistan, then he will break Alastair Cook’s record of most runs for England in the five-day format of the game. During his 12-year international career, Cook amassed a total of 12,472 runs in 161 Tests for England. By overtaking Cook, Root will also become the fifth leading run scorer in Test cricket’s history.

1st batter to score 5000 runs in WTC: Root, who is the all-time leading run scorer in the World Test Championship, needs 27 runs in the Test series against Pakistan to create history and become the first batter in the world to score 5000 runs in WTC. As of now, he has 4973 runs to his name in 58 matches played so far.

Most catches in Tests: Root has completed 201 catches in 146 Tests for England, and if he manages to complete 10 more catches in the upcoming three Tests, he will break former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid’s record of 210 catches and become the most successful fielder in Test cricket history. As of now, he is in third position. Dravid sits at No. 1 with 210 catches, and former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene is in 2nd place with 205 catches to his name.

Apart from these elite records, Root, who has 1398 runs to his name in 16 matches of the WTC 2023-25, will become the first player in the world to score at least 1500 runs in all three editions of the WTC if he scores 102 runs in the Test series against Pakistan.
