New Delhi: Rashtrapati Bhavan sources on Wednesday said that President APJ Abdul Kalam has agreed to meet the family members of Mohammed Afzal Guru, who has been sentenced to death for masterminding Parliament attack on December 13, 2001.
The meeting would take place at 1345 hours on Thursday. Afzal's wife Tabassum, who submitted a clemency petition for her husband on Tuesday, had also requested for a personal hearing by the President.
Afzal's wife, his mother Ayesha Begum and his 7-year-old son Ghalib would be meeting the President along with lawyers Nandita Haksar and N D Panchauli.
On Wednesday, the Home Ministry received a copy of the mercy plea from the Rashtrapati Bhavan for scrutiny of all the aspects before it gives its opinion to the President who has to decide whether to grant him clemency.
However, it is not certain how long the process of examining the petition would take.
Afzal’s wife Tabassum, son Ghalib, mother Aisha and brothers Aijaz and Hilal arrived in New Delhi from Jammu and Kashmir and met Afzal in the high-security Tihar Jail on Tuesday.
The families of security personnel killed in the attack also approached the President, requesting him not to grant clemency to Afzal.
