ANGAMALY: There’s hope for renal patients who cannot afford dialysis. The efforts of Humane Organisation for Palliatory Endowment (HOPE), a charity organisation, has been instrumental in conducting more than 500 dialysis free of cost at MAGJA Hospital in Mookkannoor, near Angamaly, within five months of its inception.According to a study conducted by WHO, the number of renal patients is on the rise every year. It is no different in Kerala. The cost of dialysis is exorbitant and poor patients who need regular dialysis are in a difficult plight.To cater to such patients HOPE decided to help conduct dialysis free of cost.About 50 members launched HOPE Dialysis Centre in Angamaly. Br Joseph Antony, director of MAGJA Hospital, Mookkannoor, agreed to set up the equipment in its exclusive ward.He also assured that the ICU and the service of a cardiologist would be provided in case of emergency since the government hospital in Angamaly could not provide adequate infrastructure facilities and specialised medical assistance.A committee assesses the financial position of the patients irrespective of their religion and recommends the patients who deserves free service.The Angamaly Merchants Association had donated the profit of Angamaly Fest-2009 for the functioning of HOPE Dialysis Centre. With the help of generous businessmen and voluntary organisations HOPE Dialysis Centre bought two dialysis units.The Centre needs not less than Rs 10,000 for its daily functioning.Several poor patients in and around Angamaly are in need of dialysis. Two dialysis units are not enough to cater to their needs, Francis Thachil said. The centre is seeking sponsors for two more units. In view of the heavy crowd, the centre is planning to rent a dialysis unit.HOPE is led by president Jose Thettayil, working president Francis Thachil, secretary Benny Moonjely, treasurer Jose Parekkattil and hospital director Br Joseph Antony.The concept of HOPE Dialysis Centre is unique and a model for voluntary and charity organisations. The members and office-bearers of HOPE are hopeful of getting sponsors to donate more dialysis units for helping the needy.
