Ten-year-old Sera Miriyam Binny is seated in the middle of her family at the Museum Auditorium on a hot Thursday afternoon. Surrounding her, on the display boards, are paintings she has done in the span of a year for her second exhibition, titled ‘Starry starry night’
Most of Sera’s paintings are landscapes and the life she sees around her.
She comes running without even having to call for; she is used to the media by now. “Nature inspires me the most,” Sera says.
It was at the age of three, when she participated in her residents’ association painting competition and drew her building, the road and trees around her, that her parents first noticed her talent.
Binny P Joseph, a teacher by profession, and Rany Binny, an advocate who sketches a little herself, have nurtured their only daughter’s talent ever since.
“I draw mostly during weekends, but sometimes when my mother asks me to study, I rush to the canvas and colours, she doesn’t scold me then,” Sera giggles. She enjoys playing tennis too, but Sera doesn’t want to be just an artist when she grows up, she wants to be an IPS officer. She even has a role model in B Sandhya.
Sera has won several prizes for her paintings, and she names almost all the teachers who have taught her the techniques of the art and she especially thanks Shaji Palkulankara who helped her with the major part of this exhibition.
Her first exhibition, ‘Ente Naadu’, was held a year ago.
Some of her paintings have horses, cows, parrots and dogs. Ask her whether she likes animals and her eyes go wide, “I love them but my parents don’t let me have a pet because we live in a flat.”
A fifth standard student of Holy Angels’ School, Sera loves her school and narrates the entire story of a children’s movie shown to them last week.
She isn’t concerned about missing classes because as soon as the exhibition ends, she would go back home to call up her classmate Roshni to take down the day’s notes. She expects to see her on the weekend at her exhibition. The exhibition would be on till Sunday.
