THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: People from all walks of life worked to engineer the UDF victory in Piravom, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said on Wednesday. A visibly upbeat Chandy, briefing reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting here, said that he chose to see the victory as that of a concerted effort by the UDF rather than that of an individual. “True, it was the people of Piravom who gave UDF the victory, but the entire people of Kerala had a role to play in that as it was they who created a trend in UDF’s favour. The victory reflects it,” he said, expressing his gratitude to the people. Anoop Jacob will take oath as an MLA at 9.30 am on Thursday in the Assembly, Chandy said. But he skirted questions regarding a Cabinet berth for Anoop and portfolios with a smile, saying such issues would be decided after discussions with the people concerned. Chandy roundly criticised Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan’s remark that the UDF had flowed liquor in Piravom to ensure a win and termed it ‘unfortunate and painful.’ “The past three weeks have shown both the UDF and the LDF how good the people of Piravom can be. They should not have insulted the people of Piravom so. I apologise to the people for having had to hear it for handing out a victory to the UDF. Should they have tried to justify their defeat with such a remark?” Chandy asked. The lesson he had learned from Puthuppally in all these years was that the masses would eagerly return untainted love if they were given it, Chandy said. “Before the election, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said that it would be an assessment of the government. Then they should accept the defeat now and not try to insult the people of Piravom,” Chandy said.
