Dharwad: Doctors at the SDM Hospital, led by pediatric surgeon Dr Venkatesh Annigeri, have performed a rare, but successful surgery by removing a large mass of flesh in the back of a seven-day-old girl. This mass, which occurs in the lower part of back and harbours even cancerous tissue within it sometimes, is known as ‘Giant Sacroscoccygeal Teratoma’ in medical terms.
The child from which the tumour was removed was born at Saundatti Government Hospital. Mother of the child Nirmala Kollur hails from Hirekumbri village near Yallammanagudda. The child weighed 2.5 kg at birth and was referred to SDM Hospital on the fifth day for the operation.
After a CT scan, the doctors confirmed the diagnosis of Teratoma. On the seventh day, a team of doctors performed the surgery under the ‘Bala Sanjeevini’ scheme and removed the tumour which weighed 700 gram. According to the doctors, the baby has now completely recovered. She is in the neonatal intensive care unit and is ready to go home.
Dr Anil Halageri, Dr Puneet, anaesthetist Dr Raghavendra Rao, Dr Manjunath Bhat and pediatrician Dr S N Joshi and Dr Vijay Kulkarni were part of the team that carried out the rare operation successfully.
