CHENNAI: At an event held recently, a total of 500 underprivileged students living in and around Injambakkam received an educational aid from CavinKare. As a part of its corporate social responsibility, the FMCG major, in association with GiveLife has adopted 500 children in 2008 to support their education for five years. GiveLife is an initiative by Shriram Social Welfare Trust that was started in 2007.Every year, CavinKare sponsors educational aid to these children to curb child labour, child trafficking, institutionalisation of poverty and disintegration of families. During the event, TD Mohan, co-managing director of CavinKare Pvt Ltd said, “We provide kids with stationery and their schooling is taken care of completely. If need be, we pay the tuition fee as wellfor the student.” CavinKare has chosen a particular locality, Injambakkam, and has donated educational kits to students from Classes 6 to 10. He also informed that they would sponsor students who are really good at academics and are willing to pursue higher studies after Class 10.This year, apart from two sets of uniforms, note books, bag and stationery, CavinKare has also introduced an atlas and a dictionary in their educational kit. Children from schools like Panchayat Middle School at Neelankarai, Advent Christian High School at Injambakkam, Government Higher Secondary School at Kannaki Nagar, Community Tuition Centre at Karumbakkam and Government High School at Uthandi have received the educational aid. Akhila Srinivasan, managing trustee of GiveLife and managing director of Shriram Life Insurance Company Ltd said that CavinKare has been supporting this cause for four years now and has been helped children continue their education. Also, the first three 10th grade toppers were honoured during the event. T Srividhya (424/500) from Government Higher Secondary School, T Lingusamy(414) from Advent Christian High School and R Chitra(414) from Government Higher Secondary School received prizes from the guests. Prior to the prize distribution ceremony, a cultural event was held to entertain the kids.
