CHENNAI: Hours after the Supreme Court cancelled all 2G spectrum licences issued by disgraced former Union telecom minister and DMK leader A Raja, the party refused to react to the verdict. At the venue of the DMK’s high-level meet ahead of its general council’s deliberations, party chief M Karunanidhi refused to interact with media, saying there was nothing to talk about. The pressure on the party was palpable as Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal had in Delhi sought to deflect criticism on the Centre by laying the blame for the spectrum scam entirely on Raja’s doorstep. The SC’s indictment came at a time when sibling rivalry between DMK heir apparent M K Stalin and Union Fertilizer Minister M K Alagiri is slowly but surely growing. Evidence of it was available at the meeting as the party’s south zone organising secretary Alagiri occupied the last bench while members of Parliament Kanimozhi and Dayanidhi Maran occupied the first row with Stalin on the dais with his father.Be that as it may, the meeting decided to restructure the party at the grassroots level, according to a participant. He said the party would appoint a functionary as in-charge of each ward at the panchayat and the municipal levels. They would report to the functionary who heads the local body area.Coimbatore district unit will be divided into urban and rural for better administration.
