Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix have teamed up to bring a musical twist to the big screen in the most awaited film Joker: Folie a Deux. The decision to turn the movie into a musical has sparked excitement among fans. Recently, new details have emerged about the same which suggests that the upcoming film will lean heavily towards a jukebox musical format. According to reports from Variety, Gaga and Phoenix will lend their vocal to at least 15 songs, including classics like That’s Entertainment from Judy Garland’s iconic musical The Band Wagon.
Additionally, insiders hint that two original songs will be penned and performed by Lady Gaga, which could become a strong contender for the Academy Awards in 2025. Interestingly, Hildur Guonadottir is returning as a composer, who promises to push the boundaries of the musical genre.
While specific details about the songwriters and performers for the tracks remain a mystery, sources suggest that Hildur, the Oscar and Grammy-winning composer, will “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues,” to the movie. Inspired by the successful jukebox musicals like Mamma Mia and Moulin Rouge, which earned eight Oscar nominations, director Todd Phillips, known for his bold and unconventional filmmaking style, is expected to break new ground in the upcoming DC film.
The budget for Joker: Folie a Deux has made headlines, as it is nearly $200 million, while the budget for the prequel film was just $60 million. The original film earned Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival and crossed over $1 billion in the global box office. The movie even led the Academy Awards with 11 Oscar nominations. Looking at the positive response the movie received at the Venice Film Festival, makers are now eyeing to create the same magic with Joker 2 at this year’s Film Festival.
While the plot details of Joker: Folie a Deux remain under wraps, it’s known that the film will mostly take place in the infamous Arkham Asylum. The story is said to focus on the love story between Arthur Fleck and Dr Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn. Other than Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, the cast of the DC movie includes Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson. Joker 2 is set to hit theatres on October 4.
Lady Gaga was earlier praised for her performance in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, which earned her an Oscar nomination. The singer-actress has delivered memorable performances in various films, including Machete Kills, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and House of Gucci.
