Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are looking to hijack a ‘lethal’ Liverpool target in a speculated £100 million transfer. The Reds have learnt they face stiff competition for Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon in the ongoing transfer window.
The report was shared by Football Insider and it was claimed that Manchester City joined Liverpool in the fray to rope in Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon this summer. It has also been reported that Manchester City’s interest in the England international is fuelled primarily by his impressive season at Saint James’ Park. Pep Guardiola is looking to reinforce his attacking options despite winning a fourth-successive league crown last season.

The report mentions Pep Guardiola bringing a ‘lethal’ forward to the team for next season will provide the reigning league champions with a cutting edge over the rest of the competition. The transfer might also prove a smart decision as there have been doubts over the future of multiple first-team stars at Manchester City. These names include regular starters such as Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish.
Signing Anthony Gordon is going to be a whole different challenge for both Liverpool and Manchester City. Both parties would have to meet Newcastle United’s asking bid of at least £75 million upfront. The add-ons could take the deal’s value upwards of £100 million.

On the other hand, Newcastle United have shown intention of retaining the player. They have been trying to update Gordon’s contract which expires in 2026 while Liverpool continues to hold talks about signing him. Despite his past association with Everton, the Newcastle United forward is an avid fan of the Reds. He even spent time in Liverpool’s academy till 11 years of age.
Anthony Gordon enjoyed a stellar first full season at Newcastle United in 2023/24. The winger registered 12 goals and 10 assists for the Magpies across all competitions while winning the club’s Player of the Year award. Gordon is currently representing England at the Euro 2024.
In the competition, he has come on for a minute-long cameo in a group-stage fixture against Slovenia and is yet to feature in the knockout phase.
