Saturday was another forgettable day for erstwhile Premier League powerhouse Manchester United as they went down the Bournemouth 0-3 at Old Trafford – just a few days after beating Chelsea.
This was the first time in their history that Manchester United have lost to Bournemouth at home. However, an even damning stat has emerged from their sorry show.
Manchester United have now lost more Premier League games at Old Trafford since the retirement of their former manager Sir Alex Ferguson than they lost during his reign.
According to Squawka, Manchester United lost 34 times at Old Trafford during Ferguson’s 21-season (405 games) in charge as he turned their home into a fortress.
However, since the Ferguson’s exit. the club has now lost 35 Premier League games at home (199 games since Ferguson’s final match in charge).
Since the Scot’s legendary run with the club ended, Manchester United have gone through a series of high profile managers including Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, David Moyes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick but neither has been able to restore the club to their former glory.
The 20-time Premier League winners turned to Dutch Erik ten Hag who won a silverware in his first season in charge but has been enduring a torrid time in the ongoing campaign.
The defeat to Bournemouth was Manchester United’s seventh of the ongoing Premier League season. They are placed sixth on the points table, trailing table-toppers and bitter rivals Liverpool by 10 points.
Speaking after the match, Ten Hag had admitted to have been annoyed and frustrated at the lack of consistency from his squad.
“We are really inconsistent. We have the abilities to do it, but you have to do it every game and every third day,” he said. “I think as a squad we are not good enough to be consistent and we have to work as a squad to improve that.”
