How Gen-Z Is Redefining Traditional Indian Wear: Insights from Designer Raghavendra Rathore
Men of Generation Z are fusing contemporary and tradition to create a new wave of Indian fashion that honours both creativity and legacy.

In India, as in most of the world, fashion has predominantly been seen as a woman’s domain, with men usually playing a quieter role. However, this trend has changed over time, especially with the rapid evolution of fashion driven by social media, technology, and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as the diverse tastes and attitudes of Gen-Z. The younger generation and modern men are now redefining what it means to be stylish, as well as what can be considered “traditional” wear. Classic elements are being used as a foundation, with fresh, modern additions serving as accents to create a contemporary aesthetic.

With the rise of social media and the online world becoming an integral part of daily life, fashion has undergone a major transformation, becoming more accessible and democratic. Every outfit can now be viewed by a large audience, scrutinised, and discussed from every angle, encouraging people to push boundaries and experiment. Gen-Z is not just following trends but creating new ones, blending traditional Indian garments like sherwanis and bandhgalas with sneakers or bomber jackets. This innovative fusion of old and new is breathing new life into Indian fashion.

Today’s Gen-Z male is more confident, well-travelled, and willing to invest in high-quality traditional wear. With greater purchasing power, men are now seeking out luxurious fabrics and thoughtfully designed statement pieces. This shift has made men a key demographic for luxury brands, prompting many to expand their collections to cater to this growing market.

Brands are responding by creating designs that elevate men’s appearance while fitting seamlessly into their everyday lives. The casual-formal blend—pairing merino wool T-shirts with tailored jackets—has opened up new ways for men to express their individuality while staying connected to tradition. “Quiet Luxury,” or understated couture fashion pieces, is also on the rise, where elegance speaks softly through simplicity.

In the realm of wedding couture, traditionally focused on the bride, a significant change is occurring. Indian grooms, once reliant on the opinions of their female family members, are now taking the reins in choosing their wedding attire. Gen-Z grooms are opting for minimalist, sustainable designs that reflect their personalities and values. They’re not just seeking extravagant outfits but are drawn to a blend of elegance, simplicity, and sustainability. For instance, a Jodhpur bandhgala that they pair with well-crafted black pants.

Wedding fashion is evolving in terms of colour as well. While classic shades like cream, beige, and gold remain timeless, more unconventional hues such as deep blues, dark greens, and midnight black are gaining traction. These bold shades, often accented with intricate metallic thread work or detailed beadwork, offer a contemporary twist on traditional wedding wear.

Technology is also at the forefront of the revolution. For instance, many brands have embraced artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure precision and innovation in design. Rather than taking away from our Indian heritage and handicrafts, this can, when used right, enhance it.
