Tillotama Shome Calls The Night Manager’s Emmys Nod ‘Unexpected’: ‘Olivia Colman’s Career Gives Me Hope’ | Exclusive

The Night Manager starring Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Tillotama Shome and Sobhita Dhulipala become the only Indian show to bag a nomination at the 2024 International Emmy Awards. It’s all set to compete with Les Gouttes de Dieu (France), The Newsreader 2 (Australia) and Iosi, El Espia Arrepentido 2 (Argentina) in the drama series category. As the cast of the show took to social media to share their excitement and disbelief over the feat, News18 Showsha exclusively catches up with Tillotama, who played RAW agent, Lipika Saikia Rao, in it.

In The Night Manager, which is a remake of a British television series of the same name, she reprised the character of Olivia Colman. Talking about how ‘surreal’ this achievement of making it to the International Emmys is, Tillotama tells us, “I’m so overwhelmed with the news. It’s a first. It was so unexpected. The show out and life moved on. You don’t hold on to the past. And suddenly, something like this happens! It’s the only Indian show to be nominated at the international Emmys this time.”

What makes it even more ‘special’ for her is the fact that she stepped into the Oscar-winning veteran actor’s shoes for the role. Tillotama calls her career ‘inspiring’ and says, “Even before the Oscar and highs, she did some incredible work, be it Peep Show or Tyrannosaur. The length and breadth of her career gives me hope. You may not immediately get what you want, be seen or get the opportunities but if keep your head down and wipe away the rejections and failure and keep at it, you get to enjoy a day like this. I’m really, really happy.”

The Night Manager, Tillotama feels, proves that an adapted show if made well can also fly. “Olivia Colman is such as an incredible light in our world of films and entertainment. I was very nervous about reprising a part played by her. I’ve been such a huge fan for such a long time. But Shridhar (Raghvan; writer) and my directors (Sandeep Modi and Priyanka Ghosh) really allowed the adaptation to play out in a way wherein I could make my character unique to an Indian context,” she says.

Commenting on why this will always stay close to her heart, Tillotama points out, “They created a character that walks through these extremely patriarchal corridors of power and negotiates with men in power through a great sense of humour and a bit of irreverence towards diplomacy, and I loved that! There were action sequences. And while she was also pregnant, it wasn’t made into a disability of any kind. It was fun to play her. To get nominated for a part like this feels like such a victory.”

On a parting note, the Lust Stories 2 and Delhi Crime 2 actor adds, “At this juncture when there’s so much upheaval and uncertainty in the industry, to hear this news feels really sweet. It feels wonderful to represent the country at such a time with this show.”
