Pankaj Tripathi, who brought the iconic character Sultan Qureshi to life in Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, recently reminisced about the film’s shooting days. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, the actor shared that the atmosphere on set during those days was exceptional and is rarely seen now.
Recalling the experience, Tripathi said, “I have such fond memories from the shoot of Wasseypur. It was winter in UP. The actors were all from a theatre background. Wasseypur jaisa mahaul ab set pe nahin milta. Ab alag alag vanity vans aati hai, sab apne apne room mein shot nahi hai toh bandh hai. Wasseypur mein aise nahin hota tha kyunki vanity hee nahin thi! Bahar kursi lagake baithte hai aur baatein zyada karte the (One cannot imagine such an atmosphere on any film set in today’s time. Today, celebs are usually in their own vanity vans when they are not in a shot. But back then, there were no vanity vans per se. They would lay out chairs for all of us outside, and we would sit and talk for hours).”
Tripathi is also known for his relatable personality both on and off the screen. Opening up about this, he told us, “In films, we are just actors. But in real life, we are both the actor and the director. If we misdirect, we will become someone else. Relatability is extremely important to connect an actor with the audience, but it has to be organic and that’s where craft comes into play.”
Tripathi’s last film, Main Atal Hoon, a biopic on Atal Bihari Vajpayee, did not perform well at the box office. When asked if box office failures disappoint him, he said, without pinpointing any of his films, “Not at all. If I know that I’ve given my 100 percent during the shoot and stayed true to my craft, why should I feel bad about it? I understand the box office business. Fortunately, all the films I have done, whether or not they were box office successes, have managed to return money to the producers. I know the math.”
Pankaj Tripathi is now seen in Mirzapur 3.
