Kunal Kemmu’s directorial debut film Madgaon Express opened to great reviews. Thanks to the positive word of mouth, its steady run at the box office continues with it slowly inching towards Rs 20 crore, at the time of reporting. Along with the audience and the critics, the film has also been receiving a lot of love from members of the film fraternity. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Avinash Tiwary shares that while he is being showered with appreciation from many of his contemporaries, there’s one actor whose words have stayed back with him.
He tells us, “I was standing outside the theatre after the first screening was over. I saw Ranbir (Kapoor) walking out and coming to me with a certain energy. He hugged me and said, ‘Kya super hit film banaaya hai tum logo ne! Bas phaad diya hai. Don’t listen to anyone for the first two to three days because this will have longevity beyond the Mondays and the Fridays.’ I was like, ‘Really?’ He was so excited and happy for us. It just felt so nice.”
The celebrity screening also has had other three others who couldn’t stop gushing over the film co-starring Divyenndu and Pratik Gandhi. “Kareena (Kapoor Khan), Malaika (Arora) and Arjun (Kapoor) surrounded me and Divyenndu and kept talking about how great the film is, how much fun they had and how they’re planning on watching it again. It was very fulfilling to see this kind of a reaction,” he recalls.
Avinash also revealed his Laila Majnu and Bulbbul co-star Triptii Dimri’s reaction to the praise he has been getting for his performance in the film. “Triptii messaged me saying that she heard some amazing things about me and that she’s really happy for me. She hadn’t seen the film yet. She should see it soon! She reached out when she heard that the film is receiving a good response. I did the same when Animal happened,” he says.
Avinash and Triptii won the love of swarms of fans for their chemistry as star-crossed lovers in Laila Majnu. The duo remain friends even today. Shedding light on their evolving relationship, he fondly remarks, “There’s a lot of respect I have for her. She’s truly one of the finest actors in this new generation of actresses. I’m so happy that we were together (professionally) in the initial part of her career. I hope we do something else and something bigger very soon.”
While Avinash has been a critic favourite, this is the first time that he’s tasted box office success. Needless to say, he’s elated but has a special request for the audience. “I want to reach out to everyone who keeps messaging me that they regret not watching Laila Majnu in theatres. Madgaon Express is also very nice film too. If Laila Majnu made them cry a lot, this one will make them laugh a lot. They shouldn’t regret not watching it,” says the Bambai Meri Jaan and Ghost Stories actor.
