India will face Bangladesh in the 2nd T20I of the ongoing three-match series on Wednesday (October 9). In the match, which is scheduled to take place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav will have a chance to equal Virat Kohli’s record and become the second-fastest batter in the world to score 2500 runs in T20Is.
Kohli, who announced his retirement from T20Is on June 29, 2024, crossed the 2500-run mark in 73 T20Is for India. Suryakumar, on the other hand, has 2461 runs to his name in 72 T20Is played so far.
If he manages to score 39 runs in the 2nd T20I, he will equal Kohli’s record. The overall record of scoring fastest to 2500 runs in T20Is is in the name of former Pakistan captain Babar Azam. The 29-year-old right-handed batter crossed the 2500-run mark in his 67th match.
Fastest to 2500 runs in T20Is
- Babar Azam (Pakistan) – 67
- Virat Kohli (India) – 73
- Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan) – 76
- Aaron Finch (Australia) – 78
- Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 86
Suryakumar, who made his T20I debut for India against England in March 2021, scored 29 runs from 14 balls in the series opener against Bangladesh, which was played in Gwalior on Sunday (October 6). During his stay at the crease, he hammered two fours and three sixes.
During the second match against Bangladesh, if Suryakumar manages to smash at least six sixes, then he will overtake West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran and become the third leading six-hitter in T20Is. Surya has 139 sixes to his name in 73 T20Is, whereas Pooran has smacked 144 maximums in 98 T20Is played so far.
The overall record of hitting most sixes in T20Is is in the name of Rohit Sharma. The 2024 T20 World Cup-winning Indian team captain finished his career with 205 sixes in 159 matches. New Zealand batter Martin Guptill is in 2nd position with 173 sixes in 122 matches.
Surya, who succeeded Rohit as India’s T20I captain in July 2024, has won nine out of 11 T20Is played so far. A win in the second T20I will help him equal Hardik Pandya’s tally of 10 wins and become India’s fourth successful captain in the shortest format of the game after Rohit Sharma (50), MS Dhoni (42) and Virat Kohli.
