The match was hosted at the County Ground in Taunton saw Sri Lanka win the toss and elect to bowl first. Sri Lanka were off to a phenomenal start after Chaminda Vaas dismissed Sadagoppan Ramesh in the first over.
The Arjuna Ranatunga-led side, however, had no plans for what was about to happen next. Ramesh’s dismissal paved the way for Rahul Dravid who joined Sourav Ganguly to anchor the innings for India.
Rahul Dravid emerged as the aggressor in the partnership as he raced to a half-century facing just 43 balls. His knock included 10 boundaries. Sourav Ganguly approached the game in a much more controlled fashion, registering his fifty in 68 deliveries.
As the game progressed, nothing changed and Rahul rampaged his way to a 102-ball century with his partner completing the ton facing 119 deliveries.
Ganguly next faced Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan in the 40th and 42nd overs. He smashed three sixes and a couple of boundaries against the legendary spinner. His sudden wrath saw Ganguly beat Dravid to reach 150 runs first in the game.
The record-breaking stand finally ended after Rahul Dravid was involved in a run-out, departing scoring a 129-ball 145. Ganguly continued his blistering form, accumulating 183 runs off 158 balls. His knock included 17 boundaries and seven sixes. Their heroics saw Team India end the half at 373/6 and eventually win the match by 157 runs.
India were drawn in Group A of the 1999 World Cup along with teams like South Africa, Zimbabwe, England and Sri Lanka. India had a rocky start to their campaign back then, conceding consecutive defeats to South Africa and Zimbabwe.
However, India did not lose hope, stitching together back-to-back wins against Kenya followed by another victory against Sri Lanka. They eventually crashed out of the World Cup in the Super-Six stage, a single game.
