Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman were interviewed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Tuesday. Gambhir attended the call virtually from his residence and was one of the two candidates interviewed by the CAC comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik. CAC member Malhotra also participated virtually and resumed his commentary duties after interviewing Gambhir.
Gambhir is the front-runner to replace Rahul Dravid as the head coach but former India cricketer WV Raman had a very detailed presentation during his interview. Well-placed BCCI sources inform that Raman’s presentation was very impressive and it’s likely that the CAC will interview an overseas candidate on Wednesday.
“Gambhir had a virtual interview but Raman’s presentation was very impressive and detailed. The CAC is likely to interview an overseas candidate tomorrow. Gambhir has the edge but Raman’s presentation was very thorough,” says a BCCI official.
It is still not clear whether the Indian Cricket Board will float an advertisement for the various support staff appointments, and it will become clearer once the head coach position is finalised.
“Yes, the head coach has a big say in these appointments because he would want people he is comfortable working with. Having said that, it’s not that straightforward and BCCI too can propose their own candidates or people they think are ideal for the job. Ultimately it will be Gautam Gambhir, who is likely to become the coach, who would decide his team,” says an informed source.
Selector post
It can be confirmed that the Indian cricket board also reached out to shortlisted candidates for the selector job and interviews were scheduled for the single position advertised back in January. The new selector, likely from North Zone, will most likely be replacing Salil Ankola.
In the current set-up, both Ajit Agarkar and Salil Ankola are from the West Zone and while there is no rule which says selectors have to be from different zones, BCCI wants to have representation from the North too.
Kishan Mohan, Nikhil Chopra, Mithun Manhas, and Reetinder Singh Sodhi are among the few names who have applied for the selector job and Sodhi, Manhas are front-runners to enter the men’s senior selection committee chaired by Agarkar.
