New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi has been derailed by his own party, the Trinamool Congress, after delivering a railway budget that increased fares across the board on Wednesday for the first time in 10 years.
An angry party chief, Mamata Banerjee, a former railway minister herself, summoned Trivedi to Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MPs are also slated to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a rollback in rail fare hike. They are also set to move a motion in Parliament against the fare hike.
The Trinamool Congress may even suggest a replacement for Trivedi.
The hike in passenger fares by Trivedi had immediately drawn flak from his own party members – from spokesperson Derek O'Brien, to MP Sudip Bandopadhyay and the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself.
Dinesh Trivedi in his defence said that he delivered the budget keeping the needs of the nation first, and then his party and state.
