The Bengaluru-based startup founder and CEO Suchana Seth, accused of killing her four-year-old son in North Goa’s Candolim, had made a visit to the state with her kid a week before the alleged murder. She was stayed there for five days at a five-star hotel, reports said.

Seth had come to Goa on New Year’s eve — December 31, 2023 — and returned to Goa on January 4, The Indian Express report said. And two days later, while making a “last-minute” plan, Seth went back to Goa and checked into Hotel Sol Banyan Grande on January 6.

She allegedly smothered her son to death at the service apartment that she had booked and fled the scene in a cab, with her child’s body in a bag.

Seth was detained in Karnataka’s Chitradurga, and police found the child’s body stuffed in a suitcase in the cab.

Earlier it was learnt that the motive behind killing her son could be that she did not want her estranged husband — Venkat Raman — to meet him. This along with her strained relationships with Raman might have been the probable cause, police had said.

“On December 31 (Sunday) when she arrived in Goa, she told her husband that their son was unwell, so she could not send him to meet his father. The consecutive visits to Goa over the two weekends suggest that she did not want her husband to meet their son as mandated by the court,” an officer was quoted as saying by IE.

Seth — hailing from Bengal — and Raman — hailing from Kerala — had got married in 2010, eight years after which, they filed for divorce.

Their child was born in 2019 and after the couple’s divorce proceedings in 2020, the court allowed Raman to meet the four-year-old son on Sundays.

Raman, on Saturday, recorded his statement at Goa’s Calangute police station, where he was also confronted with Suchana Seth.

Faced with each other, the two began arguing each other, making it to what would be called as a “blame game”.

In his statement, Seth’s estranged husband had claimed that he met his son last on December 10, following which, Seth hadn’t allowed him to meet their child for the past five Sundays in violation of the court order.

He said that he did not know what led to the killing, adding that only Seth would be able to tell why she committed such a crime.

Raman’s lawyer told reporters that the trigger for the offence is just a guess, adding that it might be so that she did not want Raman to meet their son or have any emotional bond with him.

A custody battle for the child had been underway for the past year in a Bengaluru family court, the lawyer added.

Earlier, in her statement to the Goa police, Seth had denied killing her son. She had told that when she fell asleep, her son was alive, but he was dead when she woke up.

Seth’s police remand, meanwhile, was extended by a children’s court in Panaji. She was produced in the court after her six-day police custody ended.
