Ravichandran Ashwin who was part of India’s World Cup 2023 squad which went to the finals was all praise for the Australian skipper who had a significant part in Australia winning the finals and securing their record-extending sixth World Cup trophy.
He also broke down Cummins’ spell in the finals and the games leading up to the big finale. Ashwin on his YouTube channel started off by saying,” Pat Cummins as an ODI bowler was struggling for quite some time in the World Cup.” The Australian skipper was not at his best regarding wickets, having picked up only 10 wickets in the nine league-stage games so far.

Ashwin noted that in the last four to five games leading up to the finals, around fifty per cent of his deliveries were cutters.
The spinner also pointed out,” In the final, he had a 4-5 field (four on the off-side and five on the leg-side).”
Ashwin who is also a spinner saw the similarity in the field and compared Cummins’ tactics to that of an off-spinner.
The veteran highlighted that” He bowled only three balls in the six-meter mark towards the stump line in the 10-over spell. He knocked off crucial wickets in the finals.”
Ravi Ashwin also pointed out that Cummins only bowled three deliveries in the six-metre mark towards the stump line in his quota of 10 overs.

Cummins also picked up big wickets in the finals where he dismissed the likes of the player of the tournament, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer who was in good touch going into the finals with back-to-back centuries.
Ashwin broke down the field for the Aussie pacer, “There were five fielders on the stump line – square leg, midwicket, deep square leg, mid-on and long leg. He bowled his entire quote without a mid-off. A game-breaking spell from Cummins apart from calling the toss right.”
Ravichandran Ashwin shared that the Aussies had deceived him and shared his conversation with former Australian captain George Bailey who said that their experience of playing in India and in the IPL helped them as they were able to identify that the black soil pitches would get better to bat on later in the innings as compared to the red soil pitches which was a key factor in their decision to bowl first at the toss.
Australia managed to beat India convincingly and get yet another World Cup trophy to extend their illustrious history in the tournament defeating India at their home ground and silencing the crowd just like the skipper intended to do so from the start.
