Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s recent trip to Nigeria has reportedly stirred up controversy within the UK royal family, leaving King Charles and Prince William fuming.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex traveled to Nigeria to promote the Invictus Games, but their visit has faced backlash, with critics labeling it as an “unofficial royal tour.” Royal expert Tom Quinn suggests that Prince Charles is particularly displeased with the estranged Royal couple’s actions, The Mirror newspaper reported.
Quinn revealed that Prince William is “absolutely furious” and determined to prevent similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, Prince Charles is reportedly angrier than ever before. The Nigerian reception to Meghan and Harry’s visit added fuel to the fire, as locals treated the couple as if it were an official royal tour, complete with receptions, school visits and charitable engagements.
Quinn suggests that this response from Nigerians confirmed the fears within the royal family that Meghan and Harry were attempting to circumvent established protocols. According to Quinn, the trip shows a departure from traditional royal behaviour, with Meghan and Harry seemingly asserting their independence from royal constraints. According to The Mirror, their actions have prompted William and Charles to contemplate how to regain control of the situation.
Despite their stepped-back roles within the monarchy, the royal expert said the couple’s speeches and demeanor conveyed an impression of full-fledged royals. Before Nigeria, Prince Harry was in London to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. His trips to the UK since he moved to the United States in 2020 always prompt fresh speculation over a potential reconciliation with his family. But he did not meet with his father on this trip.
