Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari accused former coalition member Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for using illegal means to come to power for the fourth time.
Bilawal alleged that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif is pressuring the administration to influence the election results. Bilawal on several occasions has alleged that Nawaz Sharif is using unfair means to return to power. “(He) is relying on something other than people (to become the Prime Minister),” Bilawal said in January.
Nawaz Sharif ended his four-year self-imposed exile in London in 2023 and returned to Pakistan eyeing a fourth term.
The PPP chairman said the caretaker government and the administration is also biassed towards Nawaz Sharif. “PPP’s alliance with PML-N is difficult. “This PML-N is no longer the party who had signed the charter of democracy. It is not the party whose slogan was ‘respect the vote’ but a PML-N with a mentality of Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI). Nawaz dreams of becoming Amirul Momineen,” Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was quoted as saying by GeoNews.
The Charter of Democracy (CoD) refers to a document signed by former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz in 2006 in London and one of the key points of the document was a joint struggle against the “dictatorship”.
Bilawal said he hopes the caretaker government will not interfere with the polling despite pressure from Nawaz Sharif and expressed hope that his party would form the next government after winning elections. He said the upcoming polls need to be held in a free, fair and transparent manner and added that a level playing field should be given to all the parties involved in the run-up to elections to restore the credibility of elections in Pakistan.
Political parties have until February 6 midnight for campaigning after which all campaigning activities must stop as the nation goes to elections on February 8.
