What Is Pineapple Dating? Spain's Latest Offline Romance Trend
The dating trend has increased the sale of pineapples at Mecadona supermarkets.

Single people in Spain are ditching online dating apps and embracing a unique offline approach to finding love. The trend, popularised by the Mercadona supermarket chain, involves a simple yet effective gesture: placing a pineapple upside down in one’s shopping cart. This subtle signal serves as a hint to fellow shoppers who are also seeking romantic connections. The idea is straightforward: by displaying the pineapple in this manner, singles can discreetly indicate their interest in meeting new people.

The trend first went viral on TikTok, grabbing the eyeballs of many youngsters. It has also increased the sale of pineapples at Mercadona supermarkets. Many videos have surfaced on social media where singles can be seen looking for matches in the shops while carrying a pineapple in their shopping trolleys. The code will only work for just one hour each day from 7pm to 8 pm .

Keeping an upside-down pineapple means the person is available for dating. If someone finds him or her attractive, they will need to bump their carts into others’. Once the person at the receiving end bumps back, it’s a match and the duo can go to the wine aisle to chat with each other.

Apart from the pineapple strategy, there are some other elements as well. People can add chocolates or sweets to their shopping cart and these things will be a code for serious, long-term relationships, according to Spain-based English publication Olive Press. In this case, those who are looking for casual relationships will need to place legumes or lettuce in their trolleys.

Television star and humourist Vivy Lin played a pivotal role in popularising the pineapple dating trend. She dropped a video on TikTok where the actress was seen pushing her shopping cart towards the wine aisle at a Mercadona store. “The time to hook up in Mercadona is 7 pm to 8 pm,” Lin said, as reported by BBC.

As per media reports, a few groups of teenagers were seen pushing trolleys at the supermarket in Madrid for more than one hour without purchasing any products. One man also appeared at the store in a giant pineapple suit to celebrate his bachelor party with his friends.
