The first-ever in-orbit combat drill will be soon conducted by the US military in preparation for potential battles outside Earth.
The Space System Command (SSC) will arrange the first of this technology by making history in the process. Its goal is to get the US military ready for any combat that may arise outside Earth.
SSC released a statement on Thursday, April 11, about this innovation. It informed how two commercial space businesses have inked contracts with the Space Force for the ‘Victus Hedge’ mission, which is scheduled to be finished by the fall of 2025.
As part of the Mission ‘Victus Hedge’, the command has a contract with Rocket Lab National Security and True Anomaly to supply spacecraft capable of operating the stations. These two spacecraft will be ‘The Jackal’ from True Anomaly and an unidentified Rocket Lab craft. These will show that in a real-world operational setting, the US Space Force can react appropriately to any suspicious activity in space.
As per the Space Force statement, The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has given Rocket Lab National Security a contract worth Rs 2.67 crore. In addition to this, a total of Rs 50 crore will be needed for the mission, of which the US government will pay half and True Anomaly the other half.
Lt. Col. MacKenzie Birchenough, SSC materiel leader for Space Safari stated, “The commercial space industry is developing at a never-before-seen rate, giving the Space Force more choices to react swiftly to hostile acts. Victus Haze will demonstrate and prove capabilities to be used for future TacRS operations in direct support of urgent Combatant Command on-orbit needs.”
According to the programme executive officer for Space Domain Awareness and Combat Power at the SSC, Col. Bryon McClain, the organization is eager to utilize the advancements in the commercial space industry to resist China’s increasing threat to the United States. “The United States has the most innovative space industry in the world. Victus Haze will demonstrate, under operationally realistic conditions, our ability to respond to irresponsible behaviour in orbit,” he added.
This historic mission strengthens defences against any space-based attacks and represents a major advancement. The US Space Force’s preparedness to face new threats in space sends a strong message of determination and reaffirms the country’s commitment to upholding peace and stability on the ultimate high ground as the globe embarks on a new era of space exploration and competition.
