Stinginess is something many people resort to when they feel they have spent too much on unnecessary stuff. It may be fruitful, or just an annoyance for others, but one thing that it does is that it saves money. A woman from the UK has decided to cut costs from her regular spending, and the result is astonishing.
Chrissie Milan from the UK is in the middle of her “no spend year” aiming to save as much money as she can. While vacationing in Thailand, Chrissie realised that there is a vast difference between the cost of living in this country, and in the UK. When she returned, she thought hard about the things that are actually “essential” and decided to go on a “no spend year” spree.
So, she cut the 150 pounds (Rs 15,895) budget she used for shopping and simply stopped visiting expensive places for food with friends. Furthermore, she decided not to buy coffee daily, instead made a packed lunch, saving 240 pounds (Rs 25,433) per month. The young woman was able to save 500 pounds (Rs 52,994) a month, cutting these extra costs. Now, she is on her way to save a whopping 6,000 pounds (Rs 6,36,050) by the year’s end.
Talking to the media, Chrissie said, “It’s not something I ever thought I would do really.” She gave an example of a smoothie saying, that in Thailand, she got it for 1 pound, while in the UK it cost her 6 pounds. This made her ponder where she needed to spend money, and what she could get back from it.
In January, Chrissie Milan finally decided to spend only on essentials, which included her rent and food. According to her, “I can feel the difference.” She admitted that she went back to her old habits in the middle. “I had a few weeks in the middle where I regressed slightly,” the woman added. The challenge made her realise that earlier she spent with no thought.
