A couple from Georgia, US, has adopted an unconventional method to minimise their carbon footprint and live off-grid. Their unique approach involves utilising their own waste as a resource in meal preparation. John and Fin’s innovative strategy has sparked interest and discussion online. They’ve garnered attention on platforms like TikTok, where they share their lifestyle under the handle @BelovedCabin, boasting over 157,000 followers.
As per the New York Post, the couple embarked on their journey from their 500-square-foot cabin, which has been their home for the last 12 years. They revealed to the news outlet their utilisation of a HomeBiogas Digester, an environmentally friendly and cost-effective device. This innovative apparatus converts the waste into cooking gas. The process involves a specialised toilet that channels the waste to the digester, where it undergoes transformation into clean energy.
Despite the unconventional nature of their approach, John is adamant about dispelling any misunderstandings. He firmly states, “No, our burgers don’t taste like poop,” emphasising that their kitchen remains devoid of any unpleasant odours. He goes on to explain that the device effectively masks any odours typically associated with their bodily waste.
One of the main advantages, John highlighted, is the cost-effectiveness of their setup. With indoor plumbing estimated to cost around $18,000 (roughly Rs 14 lakh), the HomeBiogas Digester came at a fraction of the price, totalling under $1,500 (roughly Rs 1.2 lakh). This cost-effective solution has allowed the couple to save money in the process. Additionally, they believe their method is environmentally friendly, saving natural resources, using less water and producing a nutrient-rich fertiliser.
But John and Fin aren’t the only ones exploring the potential of human waste power. Former professional wrestler Goldy Locks, 44, shared her experience using her own waste to grow food. She mentioned on TLC’s Extreme Cheapskates that this approach helps keep her monthly grocery bill as low as $84 (roughly Rs 6000), which is particularly important amid economic instability.
